Today was a productive day...I'm preparing for my upcoming group show in Italy at Mondo Bizarro Gallery and also for Art Basel, Miami. Some days flow like water.

First i took some self portraits for body positioning. Here's the one i chose to work from. After that i started on a

pre-gessoed panel that had a number of layers of paint already laid down over the past month for texture. I began working on this panel about 2-3 weeks ago to prepare it for this stage of painting.

After I got some underpainting for my figurative work down, i laid down some skin colored paint and did 3 layers of skintone and hard features so that it would show through until the end of the painting. This helps me keep it accurate.

In a time...

James Jean recently wrote in his blog that "courage is nothing but the absence of shame." I wonder - is courage the absence of shame or is it just a compelling force of something that needs to be done, has to happen, a destiny to just go, do, and be regardless of fear.

Its been a busy summer, a busy year, and lately i've spent most of my time at home and immersed in painting, exploring new techniques, staring out down Turk Blvd. to the sea. Sometimes i find myself wondering how this time came to be. It all moves so fast, much like a movie, and sooner or later its the closing credits.

I'm excited to say that my show "Music Boxes for the Mini Cinema" will be opening soon at Billy Shire Fine Art in Los Angeles on August 8th. The paintings are finished and i'll be framing in the next week or two. Please let me know by email if you are interested to see the preview and i'll do my best to get it to you.

More soon from the city of fog and sea...

Super 8, Leica, and Diana

Three cameras of my dreams. I've been obsessive about research on the Super 8 for the past two days, but have known and loved it for many years now. I'm strongly considering.....definitely considering Super 8, dreaming of a Leica (though too expensive for my budget at the moment), and will likely get a Diana. Sigh....

Its been a fulfilling and inspiring day of super 8 videos, looking for pictures and finding the aesthetic of the Diana camera (which i am instantly in love with), and research. slurp....

here were some of my favorite videos from the Super 8 research...

One i loved in particular was a documentary of people who traveled to New Zealand to go surfing. Makes me want to pick up and go...

Its been over three months since my last post, please forgive me oh blog gods. Its just days away from the New Year and there are so many things to reflect on this past year! Alot of travel (Philippines, New York and Miami for Basel), alot of painting, and in general i have to say its been an amazing year.

This past couple of months have been busy. I visited my friend Christopher Michel who has one of my oldest pieces out there that i made on found wood a number of years ago. The piece is in his house along with one other newer painting.

I also just finished six new paintings that were recently sent to New York. My house is empty again and i'm ready for the New Year, new directions, new explorations.

Finding myself really interested in old advertising for tobacco worldwide more recently. Its interesting to me how mass media and popular culture can drive trade and commodity to me. Maybe there will come a time where we all have the opportunity to be self-directed in our decisions, and things are not so fed to us, maybe 2009 is that time.

Some images from recent research that has inspired recent pieces:
